In Hindu religion, turmeric is considered to be a sacred thing. During any religious ceremony, turmeric-dyed strings are worn by people in their hands. The application of turmeric powder during religious worship is to symbolize fertility, purity, and prosperity.

Also, during Hindu weddings, turmeric is smeared over the face and body of the bride and the bridegroom to signify their readiness for marriage. It signifies purification of the bride and the groom before the wedding.

Even deities are anointed with turmeric paste during religious worship ceremonies. In Buddhism, statues are smeared with turmeric paste to represent Bodhisattva Ratnasambhava.

For both religions – Hinduism and Buddhism, turmeric holds a special place. It is often linked with luck, fertility, and the sun. The yellow-dyed clothes are worn by priests and monks to conduct many rituals. For instance, during the Onam festival, turmeric-dyed clothing is worn.
